Have you ever imagined being a starter on a varsity team and then being kicked out of your spot by a freshmen? That is what Center Field by Robert Lipsyte is all about. Mike, a junior, thinks he has his junior year under control. He was a starter last year in center field and has a girlfriend. Then a new kid comes in playing the same position as Mike. He is a great hitter and fielder. Mike also has a bad ankle which will not help his chance at making varsity. Mikes life starts falling apart. He gets in a fight at school, he has fights with his girlfriend, and his grades start dropping. will he be able to get his life under control or will he lose to a freshman?
